Few things spark as much debate among Manchester United fans as who was the best No. 7 in the club’s history.
With so many legendary players wearing red shirts over the years, it can be tough to pick just one. So let’s explore our options.
George Best
One name that often comes up in these discussions is that of George Best. The Northern Ireland international was a crucial figure in the United team of the 1960s, helping them win two league titles and their first European Cup in 1968.
Best was a remarkable winger known for his exceptional dribbling abilities giving him the moniker ‘The Dribbling Wizard.’ He also scored 179 goals in 470 appearances for Manchester United, making him an iconic figure in the club’s history.
Eric Cantona
Another contender for the title of best-ever No. 7 is Eric Cantona.
The Frenchman arrived at Old Trafford in 1992 and quickly established himself as a talismanic figure for the team.
He won four Premier League titles and two FA Cups in five seasons with United, scoring 82 memorable goals in 185 matches. His swagger and charisma made him a fan favorite, and his impact on the team was immense.
David Beckham
Beckham’s free-kick ability and crossing skills were second to none. But so were his various hairstyles.
“Becks” won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League in 1999 with United.
He scored 85 goals in 394 appearances for the club before moving to Real Madrid in 2003.
Cristiano Ronaldo
In his first spell at the club from 2003-2009, Cristiano Ronaldo transformed into one of the world’s best players, winning his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 while with United.
His Red Devils trophy haul also included winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League. He scored 118 goals in 292 appearances in his first spell with the club.
CR7’s speed, skill, and spectacular goal-scoring feats have made him one of the modern era’s most revered players.
Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2021, much to the delight of Manchester United fans. He scored 27 goals in 54 games, remarkable for the elder statesman. However, he left the club by mutual agreement in November 2022.
