One of the most prized clubs in world football, Boca Juniors has a total of eighteen FIFA and UEFA trophies. Here are eleven of the team’s best players that led them to the top.
Riquelme
The Argentine attacking midfielder Riquelme starred at The Bosteros for six years where he scored 44 goals in over 151 games. He’d return to play another seven years in 2007, where despite a lack of pace, continued to flash a beautiful touch and knack for set pieces. He helped the team win three Copa Libertadores and five Argentinian titles.
Silvio Marzolini
A one-club man, Silvio Marzolini spent 13 years making over 400 appearances playing left back for the Boca Juniors. He helped them win five league titles and added another later as coach of Boca Juniors in 1981.
Roberto Mouzo
The record holder for most appearances for Boca Juniors at 426 games, Roberto Mouzo, won six titles for the club. The defenseman helped the team win its first Copa Libertadores in 1977, followed by beating Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 1977 Intercontinental Cup.
Walter Samuel
Nicknamed ‘The Wall,’ tough defending Walter Samuel played over 100 games with Boca over three years. He helped The Bosteros win a Copa Libertadores and two Argentinian league titles.
Antonio Roma
The Argentine goalie Antonio Roma, called ‘Tarzan’ for his acrobatic saves, helped lead Boca Juniors to a remarkable five domestic titles over his 12-year club career.
Hugo Ibarra
Hugo Ibarra earned over 200 caps in La Boca in various stints — the longest which lasted from the 2005 – 2010 seasons. Nicknamed the ‘El Negro,’ he helped lead the team to four Copa Libertadores and five League Titles.
Diego Maradona
In his short but sweet tenure at Boca Juniors, number 10 Maradona entertained the crowds at Bombonera stadium with his superb dribbling skills and dazzling pace. He helped the team win the First Division in 1981. He also spent his last two professional years with the club, making a total of thirty appearances and scoring seven goals.
Antonio Rattin
An important piece in Boca Juniors glory years, midfielder Antonio Rattin played 350 games over a 15 year stretch with the club. A towering figure, he helped lead the team to league title in 1962, 64, and 65 and the National Tournament in 1969.
Martin Palermo
Known for his fantastic goal-scoring abilities — he holds the record for most club goals with over 300 strikes — Martin Palermo aka ‘El Titan’ played 11 years with Boca Juniors. He won 2 Copa Libertadores, 2 Recopa Sudamericana trophies, and the national championship once.
Rubén José Suñé
Rubén José Suñé helped Boca Juniors to two championships in his first stint with the club from 1967-1970. He returned to the club in 1976 and played for another four years, helping the side win two league titles, the team’s first and second Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in 1977.
Sebastián Battaglia
Defender Sebastián Battaglia has the most trophies of any Boca Juniors player, with 18 titles earned over two stints with the club, 1998 – 2003 and 2005 – 2013. His awards include 7 League titles, 4 Copa Libertadores, 2 Copa Intercontinental, 1 Copa Sudamericana, 3 Recopa Sudamericana, and 1 Copa Argentina.
