Stadium builders in Germany discovered a 1,100-pound undetonated bomb from World War II in the area around Mainz Stadium on Thursday. According to CBS Sports Golazo, bomb technicians are currently working to defuse the explosive, which belongs to the United States Army.
The Bundesliga club issued a formal statement on Thursday informing fans of the incident. Nearly 4,600 people were told to evacuate the area to make way for the contained detonation. Consequently, the fan shop closed, and all further renovations paused.
The 34,034-capacity Mewa Arena still intends to host the home match against Koln on Sunday, April 28. That is hard to believe for the club where Jurgen Klopp played most of his professional career in the 90s.
