Who doesn’t love Boxing Day football? Last season, Manchester United pulled off an epic 3-2 comeback after going down two at the break. This 2024/25 season promises to be another banger featuring ten active matchups in Matchweek 18.
Here are some of the best matchups to watch on December 26 and 27th.
Liverpool vs Leicester City
Liverpool are 85.1% of winning the Premier League, according to Opta. That might seem rather high, but Arne Slot’s men make it too convincing to think otherwise. Who will stop this Liverpool train with Manchester City weakened and Arsenal habitual bottlers?
Arsenal vs Ipswich Town
After some starts and stops this Premier League season, the Gunners seem to be finding their groove as they usually do, going into Christmas. The Emirates will host Ed Sheeran’s Ipswich Town, which should be a gimme for the Gunners. The two sides last met in 2002 when Freddie Ljungberg scored a double at Highbury Stadium.
Manchester City versus Everton
Manchester City are in freefall, kind of like the good old days. But we don’t expect Pep’s men and fans to keep feeling the pain forever. This is the time of the season when City ramp up and turn things around. Will the end of the 2024/25 season be any different?
Wolverhampton versus Manchester United
When these two play against each other, it’s goals, goals, goals. Last season, the Red Devils and Wolves combined for seven strikes, with a Kobbie Mainoo sealing the victory in stoppage time. The Ruben Amorim 3-5-2 system is off and running at Old Trafford, the forwards are bagging goals, and the feel-good factor feels restored.
Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham
The two sides are neck and neck, just outside the top four in the Premier League table. If City loses, one of these sides will start to inch into the top. Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, sacked by Tottenham in 2021, expects to exact revenge.
Newcastle v Aston Villa
We love our mid-table battles and this match proves no different. Eddie Howe’s trashed Emery’s Villa 5-1 when the two met at St. James’s Park to kick off last season. Newcastle also handed Emery’s side their first home defeat during the 2023/24 season. The Villains, however, are looking to remain pushovers. Expect a tight game this time around.
