Hansi Flick has endorsed his Brazilian forward as a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or.
It’s easy to see why. Raphinha has already racked up 25 goals and 18 assists in 40 matches, driving Barcelona to the top of La Liga and setting them on a path to the European quarterfinals.
Flick is quick to credit the player’s mindset. “Of course, if he does well this season he could have a chance,” the coach said. “He always helps us a lot, and if you see the goals he has scored it shows you how hungry he is. I’m happy with his level.”
Raphinha joined Barça from Leeds United in a move worth about $66 million, and fans wondered if he could deliver on such a hefty fee. Since Flick arrived, Raphinha has been given freedom to roam and take on more responsibility in critical moments. That trust has paid off, and the once-underrated attacker now carries Barcelona’s hopes.
A manager’s faith
Flick hasn’t let the team rest on a single-goal advantage from the first leg against Benfica. “We have to be 100% focused, and the best thing is not to think about the first leg,” he said. “Nobody is taking it for granted that we are through to the quarterfinals. We have to win.” Benfica’s high press and tendency to play well away from home mean there is no room for complacency.
Still, Raphinha’s presence offers a spark. He heads into each match with an unflinching drive to score or create chances. “It’s good to see how focused he is,” Flick explained. “He has that hunger, and he brings so much energy to the team.” The forward’s form even caught the attention of bigger clubs last summer, but Barcelona were determined to keep him.
