James Rodriguez is back in Europe. The Colombian star has signed a contract with Spanish side Rayo Vallecano for the 24/25 season.
Vallecano president Martin Presa is ready to roll out the red carpet for the 33-year-old. Presa compared the move to Maradona’s move to Napoli in 1984 in a bit of hyperbole. When Maradona joined Napoli, it was a transformative moment for the club and the city, leading them to unprecedented success: two Serie titles, a Coppa Italia, and a UEFA Cup.
Vallecano’s strategic move will not likely bring the club the same silverware, but the Rodriguez snag certainly boosts morale and enthusiasm among the club’s die-hard fans. He’ll wear the number 10.
The midfielder has embraced the life of journeyman after the acme of his career at Real Madrid, following his 2014 World Cup heroics. He’s then suited up for Bayern Munich on loan and one-season experiments at Everton, Qatari Stars League’s Al-Rayyan, and Olympiacos. He leaves Brazilian Serie A side Sao Paulo after only 18 appearances.
Despite James’ slow decline, his Colombia recall and MVP status at this summer’s Copa America re-won him plaudits. The playmaker notched six assists in six games and recorded one goal. With his status revived, his transfer speculation resumed.
What can Rayo Vallecano expect of James, who’s now back in Europe’s big leagues? It’s hard to say, but the player is well-seasoned in La Liga, having played 270 matches, scoring 88 goals, and dishing 93 assists. Joining Vallecano marks the first time he’s joined a second club in the same country.
Having seen the world in his career, James hopes to settle back down and focus on football. Video game players are already elated with his return.
