Real Madrid are reportedly willing to offer Rodrygo Goes in a sensational swap deal to sign William Saliba from Arsenal. The story, first reported by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, has since rippled across transfer rumor sites but remains firmly in the speculative realm.
Real Madrid are actively exploring ways to bring in a world-class center back. With David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger both on the wrong side of 30 and dealing with injuries, Madrid have made defensive reinforcements a priority under new manager Xabi Alonso. Saliba is reportedly viewed as a “generational talent,” while Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté is also on their radar.
The idea of using Rodrygo to unlock such a move makes sense on paper. With Kylian Mbappé now entrenched at the Bernabéu and the likes of Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, and Vinícius Jr. driving the attack, Rodrygo’s minutes could diminish. Despite being just 24, and underused at this summer’s Club World Cup, he may be the odd man out. His contract runs through 2028.
But that doesn’t mean Arsenal are listening.
Mikel Arteta, speaking last May 2 amid earlier reports linking Saliba to Madrid, made it clear the French defender isn’t going anywhere. “He is so happy here. He wants to keep developing. He wants to be the best and he’s in the right place.” Saliba himself signed a long-term deal through 2027 just last year and is viewed internally as untouchable.
The swap rumor deal is likely far-fetched. Madrid, while admirers of Saliba, are more likely to pursue Konaté given his contract situation at Liverpool. He reportedly turned down extension offers and could be available on a free next summer.
One potential casualty of Madrid’s depth
If there’s a story buried within the story, it’s Rodrygo’s shifting status at Real Madrid. Once an untouchable forward, the 24-year-old now finds himself in an increasingly crowded frontline. He’s played 212 matches, scored 39 goals, and was instrumental in multiple title runs. But with Mbappé’s arrival and rising stars like Güler and Endrick in the mix, Madrid may be quietly open to letting him go.
Arsenal are monitoring Rodrygo’s situation closely and are waiting to see if Madrid would be open to a loan deal. The Brazilian started just one of six matches at the Club World Cup this summer and logged only 92 minutes overall. While Rodrygo is reportedly keen to stay and fight for his place under Xabi Alonso, Arsenal are said to be ready to move if Madrid shift their stance. Tottenham have also shown interest, reportedly preparing a €60 million (£52 million) offer.
The club reportedly value him at over €100 million ($108 million), though some insiders suggest that figure is inflated to drive up interest. Arsenal, for their part, remain unlikely to entertain any deal that involves losing Saliba.
So while the rumor mill spins, the reality is this: Madrid need a defender. Arsenal won’t part with theirs. And unless Rodrygo himself pushes for a move or Madrid propose a loan, this swap deal remains more theory than threat.
