As one of England‘s most successful football clubs, Chelsea has a storied history of wearing some of the most iconic football kits.
From classic blue to bold designs from Umbro, Adidas, and Nike, here are the top 5 Chelsea kits of all time.
2004-2005 Umbro home kit
Every fan loves the kit that brought their club the most success. Chelsea wore the 2004/05 Umbro home kit during their historic Premier League title-winning campaign under Jose Mourinho. This was the Blues’ first league title of the Premier League era.
The simple design features a blue shirt with white trim on the V-neck and cuffs and the club crest on the left chest. Blue shorts accompanied the kit.
2012-2013 Adidas home kit
One year after Chelsea won its first-ever Champions League, they followed up their triumph in the Europa League in another dazzling blue kit.
The 2012/13 home shirt was all about the golden trimmed details on the Adidas 3-Stripes, which ran down the shoulders to the shorts and socks. The gold accents also appear on the club crest, Adidas logo, and Samsung sponsor.
1994 – 1996 Umbro away kit
Bad, meaning good? The Chelsea orange and grey away kit may not have won design plaudits then, but now it’s considered a retro collectible.
The shirt featured a bold orange badge, grey/white stripes, and a nylon collar, capped off with a Coors logo. Combined with the orange shorts and socks, Dutchman Ruud Gullit felt right at home.
The overall heavy design of the shirt added to its charm.
2004/06 Umbro Away kit
Of course, we must include the Chelsea 2004 away kit because Blues legend Didier Drogba notched his first goal in the shirt. He scored 164 goals in 381 games during his Chelsea career.
The shirt — looking like an Oakland Raiders jersey of the past — was primarily black with silver elements on the shoulders and logos. But the subtle blue trim on the kit gives it an edge.
The Blues wore this iconic kit during Jose Mourinho‘s first season as Blues boss, winning the domestic title and the League Cup.
1997/98 Umbro Away kit
Notice how we haven’t selected any of the recent Nike kits as part of the list — they’re just too strange and divisive. This is despite Chelsea’s triumphant 2020/21 Champions League campaign. So for our last pick, we’re sticking with another staple: the 1997/98 Umbro away kit.
This classic Chelsea kit featured a striking yellow combined with a two-blue color scheme: light and dark. The club’s circular badge took center stage. Moreover, the distinctive jersey was sponsored by Autoglass and donned by Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola.
The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League that year.
