Former Real Madrid star Predrag Mijatovic thinks Vini Jr. is not doing himself any favors. The Brazilian winger netted a penalty in the 58th minute after a handball by Real Sociedad defender Sergio Gomez.
The Real Madrid star acknowledged the jeering crowd at Anoeta Stadium by silencing them in a 2-nil victory.
Facing whistles is not new for the 24-year-old, who’s also become the target of racist insults in Spain. Last May, the player posted a video documenting all the cases against him where even “M*nkey” chants were heard.
Two weeks ago, Vini Jr told CNN that Spain should be stripped of hosting the 2030 World Cup if fans can’t improve their behavior.
“I think we have to move the location, because if a player doesn’t feel comfortable and safe playing in a country where they can suffer racism, it’s a bit difficult,” said Vini.
Do Madrid fans want Vini to quiet down?
Spanish fans are expressing their displeasure with the forward’s comments across La Liga stadiums. But even some Real Madrid fans say enough is enough with the celebratory gestures.
“He’s throwing stones at his own roof. He’s throwing stones, especially knowing everything that’s going on around him,” Real Madrid legend Mijatovic told Spanish outlet Sport.
“He should take this step, calm down a little. We were very happy with the goal, but then we were very disappointed with the celebration. Why does he need this? He’s doing himself a lot of harm. I speak to many Real Madrid fans who love him, but we’re all upset with his behaviour.”
The “shush” celebration is not new. Messi, Neymar, and Suarez have all done it. It’s just that Vini, the so-called “provocateur” did it. His teammates have promised him they’d walk off the pitch if the racist chants continue.
“Vinicius’ gesture after his goal? We heard the insults towards him. You provoke, you receive,” said Real Madrid defender Carvajal.
“My message is clear, as Spain or Real Madrid’s captain, ZERO tolerance against racism.”
Vini Jr is the leading candidate for this year’s coveted Ballon d’Or award after scoring 26 and assisting 11 in a big trophy-laden season: Champions League, La Liga, and Spanish Super Cup.
His Ballon d’Or winner’s speech could be his biggest shush yet.
