Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is in the hot seat for touching the iconic “This Is Anfield” prior to United’s 7-0 whopping.
The shameful act only adds fuel to the Red Devils’ embarrassing defeat to the Reds.
In a behind-the-scenes ‘Inside Anfield’ video uploaded to Liverpool’s official YouTube channel, we noticed the Dutch player do something unheard of. Weghorst tapped the revered “This is Anfield” sign as the teams walked out – a gesture that is typically exclusive to Liverpool players and fans.
After all, he plays for a rival team.
Weghorst’s dreamed of playing for Liverpool since childhood
United signed Weghorst on loan in January, not fully aware of his fondness for the Reds.
“I always found Liverpool very special. I still get goosebumps from ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ the Dutchman once told DAZN back in 2020.
“There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because so many Dutch played there.”
In 2018, Weghorst revealed to De Telegraaf, a Dutch news outlet, that he had “dreamt of playing for Liverpool since childhood.”
Sunday’s clash was Weghorst’s 14th cap with United. Many Red Devil fans do not want to see him sport the badge next season. English sports presenter Richard Keys lambasted Erik ten Hag over the signing of Wout Weghorst on his blog, saying “It’s not Weghorst’s fault, but he has to be the worst player I’ve ever seen in a United jersey.”
“He’s a bang ordinary No.9, who couldn’t get in a struggling Burnley team, but what on earth possesses Seven Hag to think he’s a sumptuous 10? One who can ‘wear the tuxedo’ as the Americans say.”
Weghorst later admitted that he touched the sign to “wind up” international teammate Virgil van Dijk in the tunnel.
“From the national team I know that Virgil always touches the sign,” he said.
“The only intention I had was to stop him touching it and wind him up.”

Manchester United grilled the Dutchman for his actions
Manchester United took to Twitter to express their displeasure with the Dutchman’s unprecedented actions.
“Weghorst tapping the This Is Anfield sign was clearly a jinx for United.”
Another tweeted: “Shocking. They always find a way to make the humiliation worse. Shameless, absolutely shameless.”
A third replied with “This was the final straw with Weghorst for me, don’t you dare sign him permanently.”
The match turned out to be a forgettable one for Weghorst and his United teammates as they suffered one of their worst-ever defeats in the Premier League. Liverpool attackers Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah each scored a brace, with Robert Firmino putting the cherry on top to make it 7-nil.
United have a chance to redeem themselves when they take on Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday.
