When was the last time you heard Lionel Messi speak English? Now that he’s come stateside to suit up for Inter Miami, he doesn’t have much choice but to tease a little. The Argentine legend appeared in the latest Bad Boys promo with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
Here he is, showing up to the Miami house of Hollywood A-listers Smith and Lawrence for a cameo. The eight-time Ballon d’Or rings the doorbell, to which he audibly says in English, “Bad boys?”
“Wrong casa,” Smith responds, “Yeah, they live down there… bad boys is at the other… thing,” before Messi repeats himself. The actors close the door in Messi’s face. “Mucho gusto,” hilariously responds Lawrence.
Messi’s brief appearance in the trailer (here’s the full trailer) blew up the interwebs, with fans mostly remarking about hearing Messi speak English for the first time. Note that the GOAT is known to speak English with some of his new teammates.
“Bro has been fooling everyone for years so he can hide from the media,” observed @CFCMod_ on X.
“This American PR hits different,” said another.
“The number of times he’d have practiced this 😭,” quipped one.
Messi PR has been ‘hitting differently’ in the States, where he also made his first appearance in a Super Bowl commercial ad with Michelob Ultra.
Will Smith teased the Messi spot in an Instagram he published on Sunday in which Messi promptly kicks the ball into the camera. The new Bad Boys: Ride or Die film opens via Sony Pictures Entertainment on June 5.
