Ruben Amorim has wasted little time pinpointing where he needs reinforcements at Manchester United, and all signs suggest Patrick Dorgu will be his first recruit. This 20-year-old Denmark international has impressed at Lecce, where he broke into senior football just last year.
Now, according to multiple reports, United have worked toward a package worth around $42 million to secure him before the January window closes.
Dorgu’s emergence has been rapid. He’s physically strong, deceptively quick, and calm in possession. While some supporters question the fee for such a young player, there’s growing belief he’s the ideal fit for Amorim’s wing-back system. Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth noted, “There would be no problem reaching a personal agreement with Dorgu, who is open to joining Man United.”
A potential turning point in transfer conversations
Lecce’s president, Saverio Sticchi Damiani, acknowledged the negotiations, calling it “a satisfaction” to discuss a player raised in their Primavera academy. Meanwhile, Dorgu’s former coach Jens Fonnskov Olsen offered a word of caution, saying, “If I have to be a little cheeky, I hope he chooses something other than Manchester United right now.” Yet the player’s family remains enthusiastic. Sheth also stated, “His family are ‘pushing’ for a move to Old Trafford. They believe it could be a ‘turning point’ in his career.”
Amorim’s immediate priority is depth on the left flank, especially with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling for fitness. Dorgu’s versatility—he can play further up the pitch if needed—further cements his value. There’s talk that United considered recalling Álvaro Fernández from Benfica, but the focus has stayed on Dorgu, a natural left-footer who flourishes in advanced wide roles.
While no transfer is official until the ink dries, optimism remains. Lecce had initially demanded a price close to $42 million, and United appear ready to meet terms that satisfy both sides. If the final details come together, Dorgu could find himself wearing a United shirt in a matter of days, which would mark a significant milestone for both the player and Amorim’s short tenure at Old Trafford.
