In a surprising move, CONMEBOL has raised the 2024 squad size to 26 players.

The squad limit increase follows the precedent established by 2022 in which FIFA permitted adding three players during the COVID-19 pandemic. 96 extra players headed to Qatar.

Two weeks ago, UEFA also confirmed nations in the could send up to 26 players. The addition prompted coach Didier Deschamps to add 33-year-old World Cup champion N’Golo Kante to his provisional roster.

CONMEBOL’s announcement comes after many teams, Brazil included, already revealed their 23-man roster for the tournament. Does that mean Richarlison or a quickly recuperating Neymar might make the squad?

Given the change, national teams are discussing which players are worth adding. We’re pretty sure newly hired men’s boss Jesse Marsch will jump at the opportunity to recruit some younger talent. However, it remains to be seen if all coaches will maximize the 26-player list.

“Regarding the number of players on the roster, the decision is that each team may register up to a maximum of 26 players in the competition (on the roster),” declared CONMEBOL in an official statement on Thursday.

“All players (up to 26 players) must be included in the Provisional List submitted by May 5, 2024.”

Given the additional players, which players do you want to see make your team?
