USMNT player Cole Campbell could make his first appearance for the Borussia Dortmund first-team when they take on Union Berlin in the Bundesliga this weekend.
The 18-year-old was called up to BVB‘s first team due to the absences of key players Karim Adeyemi, Julien Duranville, and Gio Reyna.
“Karim Adeyemi and Julien Duranville will be out for a while. We expect them to return after the international break in November. Gio Reyna also had a setback, the same applies to him,” said BVB boss Nuri Sahin.
The unfortunate injury to Campbell’s teammate and compatriot, Gio Reyna, allows him a chance to shine.
Does Cole Campbell have Pulisic potential?
Some USMNT faithful seem to think he has Pulisic potential. If so, the first team call-up is just the start of a fruitful career, with Pochettino likely to call him into action for World Cup 2026.
Two years ago, two Dortmund scouts heard that 15-year-old Cole was set to make his debut in the Icelandic professional league. Months later, he joined BVB’s youth team. He joined the senior squad for winter training camp last season and signed a long-term contract last July. And now, he’s finally getting the call-up to the Black and Yellow.
Last March, the Houston-born forward switched allegiances to the United States and made his U19 debut against England.
So, how good is Cole Campbell? For now, all we have is a seemingly rapid player in YouTube clips. But this is from Schalke U19 coach Norbert Elgert, who said this after watching Campbell run riot over his team last August.
“Cole Campbell is a Bundesliga player. He would be a regular in our first team, he is brutally good.”
“It was a dream come true for me when I moved to BVB,” said Campbell upon signing for BVB over the summer.
“Now I’m living that dream and have been working since day one to keep improving. I am very happy and will continue to work hard to be successful at Borussia Dortmund.”
Can Campbell join recent BVB youth breakout stars, including Youssoufa Moukoko and Karim Adeyemi, as well as past starlets USNMT and former starlets Gio Reyna and Pulisic? We’ll soon discover if this dribbling sensation can excel in the big leagues.
