Real Madrid have offered €55m for 22-year-old Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch player was a revelation in last year’s Champions League where he scored the game-winning goal against Tottenham in the first leg of the UCL semi-finals.

Van De Beek netted 17 and dished 13 assists in 57 games last season, helping Ajax win the Eredivisie and the KNBV Beker. Ajax narrowly missed out on the Champions League final with Tottenham’s remarkable second-leg comeback.

“We’ll do everything in our power to keep Van De Beek,” said Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, “but when clubs like Real Madrid come into the picture it’s difficult.”

While Paul Pogba is Real Madrid’s primary target, a deal for the Frenchman appears unlikely with a week left in the Premier League summer transfer window. However, Van De Beek is Real’s first alternative and paves the way for Los Blancos to sell James Rodriguez to Atletico for €42m on a permanent transfer.
