Manchester City are interested in signing Southampton forward Danny Ings as a potential replacement for Sergio Aguero, according to Sky Sports.
Aguero has been lined up for a move to Barcelona to join friend and international teammate Lionel Messi.
City have identified Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland as the ideal replacement but the £100m price tag remains daunting.
Ings would cost a mere fraction of Haaland. The England forward is stalling on a new contract at Southhampton.
Liverpool sold Ings to Southampton in 2019 with a 20% sell-on clause, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Is Ings a worthy Aguero replacement?
The interest in Ings may come as a surprise to Manchester City fans.
The 28-year-old Ings scored 22 goals in the Premier League last season. But he’s only scored 8 this term due to multiple injuries.
With 30 goals in 60 Premier League games, a fit Ings could offer Manchester City an out-and-out goalscorer.
Replacing Aguero, Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer with 257 goals in 384 appearances and one of the Premier League’s best, will always be a reach.
Perhaps Manchester City is lining up both Haaland and Ings this summer, with the former a more rightful Aguero replacement with Ings a formidable backup. Man City undoubtedly have the money to pursue both.
That makes more sense, right?
