There are some amazing front-three in the annals of football. Most notably, the indomitable “MSN” Messi, Suarez, and Neymar during that amazing 2014-15 treble-winning season at Barcelona. The three combined for a total of 122 goals and 61 assists.
But right now, it’s all about the “Triple Expresso.” That’s front three Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Trinity Rodman, who’ve combined for 9 of Team USA’s 11 goals in the Paris Olympics.
The big three, dubbed “Trident,” have scored three goals each to lead the United States to the gold medal match. The American forwards face off against Brazil on Saturday in the Olympic final.
Better nickname: ‘Trident’ or ‘Triple Expresso or…?
On Thursday, the three stars appeared on the Today Show to announce their new nickname.
“We have a proposal for our trio name to be ‘Triple Espresso.’ So we’re going to put that out into the air and let people run with that, because we like that as well,” said Rodman.
She miffed at the idea of calling the trio ‘Holy Trinity’ since it contained her first name. Teammate Christen Press also suggested Triple Trouble.
Center forward Sophia Smith is the collective’s latest hero, notching the game-winning extra-time goal against Germany in the Olympics semis. Rodman scored the sensational extra-time winner against Japan in the previous game.
But can the Trident step up when their best is needed? Brazil will be looking to win one for the legendary Marta. Meanwhile, USWNT’s new boss, Emma Hayes, is just a game away from glory in her first major tournament.
