Chelsea supporters are over the moon for their new record-signing Moises Caicedo. But something strange happened upon announcing the Ecuardorian’s shirt number reveal at the club.
One Blues supporter spotted the error on the team’s website, which announced that the midfielder would carry on with his Brighton & Hove Albion shirt number, 25.
Moises Caicedo set to inherit Gianfranco Zola Number 25
The player contacted Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola to get the Italian’s permission to adopt the squad number. “Hi Moises! Thank you for the message. I hope it will bring to you as many pleasures as it brought to me,” wrote Gianfranco.
Zola’s Chelsea career spanned from 1996 to 2003, during which he made over 300 appearances and scored 80 goals. He won two FA Cups.
However, the site’s reveal etched an erroneous sentence.
“He took the no.23 shirt for Senegal at the 2022 Qatar World Cup but that is currently occupied by fellow midfielder Conor Gallagher,” read the quickly amended post. The admin later edited the sentence with Caicedo’s correct nationality.
Caicedo participated in his training session on Wednesday since becoming the Premier League’s record transfer signing at $146 million.
“I am so happy to join Chelsea! I am so excited to be here at this big club and I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me. I just knew I wanted to sign for the club,” the Ecuadorian stated upon inking the deal.
“It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”
The player could make his first appearance for the Blues this Sunday against West Ham.
