Harry Maguire is the much-deserved Premier League Player of the Month Award for November. It’s a first for the much-maligned Manchester United center-back. But who’s won the most Premier League Player of the Month awards? Look at the top players to collect the award at least five times.
Who decides the Premier League Player of the Month?
Before we dissect the top players who’ve won the Premier League Player of the Month Award, let’s review its evaluation process.
The award, which began in 1994 with the inaugural recipient Tottenham’s Jurgen Klinsmann, goes out once a month to the most outstanding Premier League player. That selected player is usually on the offensive side of things, so Maguire’s award is a bit of an anomaly. The last Manchester United defender to win the award was Nemanja Vidić in January 2009. Furthermore, a combination of panel experts, Premier League captains, and the public determine the monthly winner.
Forwards Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane are the co-joint leaders of the Premier League month award with seven.
Sergio Aguero — 7-time Premier League Player of the Month
The Argentine striker won the Premier League Player of the Month award seven times during his decade-long career with Manchester City. His first award came in October 2013 for his four-game five-goal haul.
Aguero’s last Premier League Player of the Month award came in January 2020. The legendary striker bagged 259 goals and notched 73 assists as a Citizen, snatching five Premier League titles along the way. He’s still the Premier League’s hat-trick leader with twelve all-time.
Harry Kane — 7-time Premier League Player of the Month
Spurs legend Harry Kane joins Sergio Aguero as the player with the most Premier League Player of the Month awards with seven.
While Kane never won a Premier League medal, his slew of accolades with Tottenham speak for themselves. The three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner is the highest Premier League scorer for a single club (213) and the most goals in a calendar year (39).
Interestingly, Kane’s also the first player to score a Premier League goal every day of the week and every month of the year.
Steven Gerrard — 6-time Premier League Player of the Month
Legendary Reds midfielder Steven Gerrard won the Premier League Player of the Month six times in 17 EPL seasons. “Captain Fantastic” never won the Premier League title with Liverpool — that silverware came later under Klopp — but the clutch midfielder guided the Reds to European Cup glory during the Instabul Miracle in the 2005 Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo — 6-time Premier League Player of the Month
Cristiano Ronaldo is a six-time holder of the Premier League Player of the Month award and only the third player to win the POTM award in consecutive months.
The Manchester United legend won four Player of the Month awards in his first six-year stint at Old Trafford. He won two more upon his return to the club in the summer of 2021.
He has the most ever Player of the Month awards in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues, with eleven. Messi is second with 8, followed by fellow countryman Sergio Aguero.
Van Persie, Rooney, and Salah — 5-time Premier League Player of the Month Awards
Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, and Mohamed Salah have each won the Premier League Player of the Month award five times.
Dutch striker Robin van Persie won the award four times as an Arsenal striker and one time as a Red Devil. Man United legend Wayne Rooney joins him along with Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah. The “Egyptian King” received his fifth POTM award last October and might have a couple more under his belt before jumping ship for Saudi Arabia.
Who will join the Premier League’s exclusive list? I’m not a betting man, but I will probably go with Erling Haaland. The 23-year-old Norwegian sensation already has two POML awards in his first two seasons at City.
