In the battle of recently released boot packs, Puma‘s Unisport ‘Great Wave’ collection takes the cake. That’s because the boot takes inspiration from one of the most famous pieces of Japanese art and culture: The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai.
The honorary cleat fuses together the deep blues and whites of the original artwork along the upper. On the Puma Future 7, the large waves tower over a snow-capped Mount Fuji, with the red Puma icon appearing to leap over the entire scene. The quintessential Japanese sun shines on the boot’s flip side, including a subtle touch of red on the studs.
The lower-cut Puma King Ultimate design is much more streamlined and condensed, with the Great Wave enmeshed into the Puma formstrip. Again, the iconic red sun becomes a hallmark of the boot’s interior. The soulplate shimmers in blue, providing great contrast to the off-white colorway.
The boot design is a testament to Hokusai’s resilience—he finished The Great Wave at 77 years old. In this UniSport exclusive, Puma ensures the talismanic artist lives on.
