Never say never, but his name had to be thrown into the ring. Xavi Hernandez, that is.
The former Barcelona player and boss has been linked with taking over the head coach role at Beckham’s Inter Miami. How viable that is is another matter.
Tata Martino’s surprising departure for “personal reasons” has left the Herons with an interesting void. The team’s superstars and Barcelona alums Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba require a special coach: preferably someone who speaks Spanish and is liked by, most of all, Messi.
Debunking the Xavi to Inter Miami speculation
44-year-old Xavi fits the bill. But the Spaniard’s past sour relationship with Alba, specifically, stains the opportunity.
The two got into a spat during Xavi’s managerial role at Barcelona. Xavi’s decision to favor Alejandro Balde over Alba caused considerable tension. Insider Blaugrana outlet Cadena SER states that their professional and personal relationship is irreparable.
While some reports claim that Messi personally contacted Xavi, there have been zero confirmed discussions between Inter Miami and Xavi. Avoiding issues with Alba and, thereby, a potentially fiery dressing room was already a deal-breaker for Beckham — especially in Messi’s final MLS season.
Xavi has also expressed interest in staying in Europe to coach another top side. He was in contention for Ten Hag’s job at United before the Red Devils landed on Ruben Amorim.
So, where will Xavi be the head coach next? Not Inter Miami, as that’s one reunion he’s eager to avoid.
