Dani Alves is in prison.
That’s right; the Brazilian international has been provisionally jailed without bail after being heard by the judge over his sexual assault accusations. He remains detained in a Barcelona jail.
“The magistrate has agreed to the provisional detention communicated and without bail,” reported the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia in a brief statement.
The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve in a Barcelona nightclub. The victim claims Alves raped her in a bathroom, forcing her to perform oral stimulation. He also reportedly slapped and insulted the woman.
The Brazilian continues to deny any wrongdoing.
The sentence complicates Alves’ participation in Liga MX, where he currently plays for side Club Universidad Nacional. Update: Pumas terminated their contract with Dani Alves following the player’s arrest.
The 39-year-old joins the list of footballers incarcerated for sexual assault, including Benjamin Mendy, Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Mason Greenwood. The rape accusations over Arsenal star Thomas Partey are still pending.
