As if the “Welcome to Hell” rematch needed further introduction — rain showers are threatening to postpone tonight’s Galatasaray vs Man United game at Ali Sami Yen Stadium.
Istanbul faces a colossal downpour, followed by bouts of lightning and thunder.
“We are closely monitoring the weather forecast and at this stage the match will go ahead as scheduled,” stated UEFA earlier today.
Galatasaray fans are primed and pumped for “Welcome to Hell” redux
Rewinding to 1993, a pivotal moment in football history unfolded. Sir Alex Ferguson‘s team faced a crucial knockout game in Istanbul. Despite high expectations, they were held to a 0-0 draw after an intense 3-3 clash at Old Trafford.
In a turn of events, Eric Cantona received a red card. Post-match tensions escalated, leading to an alleged altercation between the players and riot police in the tunnel, marking a dramatic exit from the European competition. Bryan Robson later needed six stitches to the face before Galatasaray fans pelted the exiting Red Devils bus with rocks.
Said Sir Alex Ferguson after that epic clash 30 years ago: “I never want to go back there again.”
Tonight was supposed to be the second iteration of that epic match. Will the Galatasary fans get to scare off their opponents at home again? Just look at these scenes.
