Former Manchester United left-back is being charged for posting homophobic abuse on Snapchat following a PSG-Manchester United Champions League clash in 2019.
The Red Devils star-turned-pundit never shies away from sharing his opinions. But in 2019, he took it one step too far.
A Paris court is fining the Frenchman €1,000 for using homophobic language after United defeated the Parisians 3-1 in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
The court is also forcing the 41-year-old to pay €2000 to two anti-hate charities, Stop Homophobia and Mousse. They originally co-filed the “public insult.”
But the examining magistrate for the case changed the accusation to a ‘non-public insult’ and submitted it to the Paris Court of Police.
What did Patrice Evra say?
“Paris, you are queers, you are queers,” shared the 41-year-old on Snapchat back in 2019. The comments infuriated viewers worldwide, with Evra lionizing the Red Devils players as superiors, “Here, it’s the men who talk.”
“The homophobic remarks of a personality like Patrice Evra fuel hatred and violence against LGBT people, in particular in countries where homosexuality is criminally repressed, like in Senegal, the country where Patrice Evra comes from,” read the statement from the complainants’ lawyer.
Evra doubled down on his homophobic insults last January, telling the French newspaper Le Parisien that there are at least two gay players at every club.
“When I was in England, they brought someone to talk to the team about homosexuality.
“Some of my colleagues said ‘it is against my religion, if there is a homosexual in this locker room, let him leave the club’ and other comments.
“At that time, I said, ‘shut up’. I played with players who were gay. Face to face, they opened up with me because they are afraid to speak otherwise.
“There are at least two players per club who are gay. But in the world of football, if you say so, it’s over.”
