Liverpool are seriously stepping up efforts to sign Xabi Alonso. The Reds offered the unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen coach a three-year offer at Anfield. That’s according to Football correspondent Fraser Gillan, who confirmed Liverpool’s initial approach.
Alonso is keen to continue Klopp’s success at Liverpool. The Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and most recently, Carabao Cup-winning boss announced last January that the 2023/24 would be his last due to burnout.
Meanwhile, Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen is flying high in the Bundesliga. They maintain an eight-point lead over second-placed Bayern Munich. Die Werkself are also in the Europa League Round of 16 and the semi-finals of the German Cup.
Xabi Alonso probes new chapter as Liverpool leader
Alonso’s Leverkusen contract expires in 2026, with the Spaniard unlikely to see it out. The former Reds player favors this moment to take the next step in his coaching career. And Real Madrid is not on the cards, given Ancelotti’s continued success there.
Bayern Munich is also an option, mainly due to his allegiance to the club as a former player, but the Premier League offers the best test. The EPL is arguably the most competitive league in the world and where Alonso will earn true credentials.
Xabi’s Anfield arrival could soon mean the Premier League now have two of the best-ever pass masters, the latter being Trent Alexander Arnold.
