As they say, expect the unexpected, especially when a team is in flux. Memo Ochoa has been cut from the Mexican national team. Apparently, the player and coaching staff came to a common agreement.
For a decade, Ochoa served as Mexico‘s starting goalkeeper while also becoming El Tri’s third-most-capped player. But his international resume is put on hold, at least for this summer’s Copa America.
Is Ochoa’s time with the Mexican National Team finished?
Ochoa faced a poor start to his campaign at Serie A club US Salernitana 1919 this season. In fact, he lost the starting job last February for the to-be relegated side. But no one doubts that Ochoa is on a magical level when it comes to international tournaments. He won Best Mexican Player in the 2018 World Cup and was the first Mexican nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 2007.
However, El Tri boss Jaime Lozano is preparing his side for the long run, aka World Cup 2026, and needs to build the future now. Luis Malagon of Club America (27 caps) will get the starting nod, followed by backups Juilo Gonzalez and Tala Rangel. It’s strange to see Ochoa not even on the list, as a backup!
“I spoke with him to let him know about my decision and reiterate that it doesn’t mean he’s out of the reckoning for the 2026 World Cup,” Lozano told reporters on omitting Ochoa from the Copa America roster.
“Right now we just want to watch other players but he’s still in the frame.”
Lozano also cut Fulham striker Raul Jimenez and Chucky Lozano from the 30-man list for upcoming friendlies, opening up opportunities for Marcelo Flores and Santi Gimenez, respectively. The final Copa America roster will consist of 23 players.
Does Ochoa’s absence make Mexico better or worse for this summer’s Copa America?
