Manchester City have quickly become one of football’s best clubs this century, having received huge investments in coach and player talents from new owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan who bought the team for £210 million in 2008.
From the likes of Sergio Aguero to Kevin de Bruyne, let’s take a look back at some of City’s best signings of all time.
Joe Hart
The physical and agile English goalie Joe Hart played for Manchester City during the relaunch of their most successful years after Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan bought the team for £210 million in 2008. Hart helped the team win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two Football League Cups as a starter.
Vincent Kompany
The Belgium center back has been at Man City for over a decade, providing a fortress of defense for the side. In 336 caps, the captain has helped lead the team to 4 Premiership titles, 1 FA Cup, and two Community Shields.
Pablo Zabaleta
The right-back Pablo Zabaleta earned over 200 caps with Man City, winning 2 Premier Leagues, an FA Cup, 2 English Cups, along with English Super Cup trophy. Known as the heartbeat of the club, the once Man City captain will always be remembered in City history.
Yaya Toure
A towering box-to-box midfielder, Yaya Toure put Man City back into the spotlight by leading the side to an FA Cup win 2011 after a 35-year trophy drought. The rest is history — the Ivorian footballer is a 3-time Premier League Champion, a 3-time English League Cup Winner along with an English Super Cup trophy.
David Silva
The Manchester City maestro continues to shine in this his 9th season with the club. It’s no mistake that City has seen some of its most successful years since the Spaniard’s arrival — 2 FA Cups, 4 Premiership titles, and 5 Football League/EFL Cups. In Silva’s 253 Premier League appearances for the club, he’s scored 50 goals and notched 75 assists.
Kevin de Bruyne
An FA Cup Winner and two-time Premier League champion, Kevin de Bruyne won Player of the year for his stellar 2017 – 2018 season where he scored 12 goals and bagged 21 assists.
The ultimate all-around midfield creator is enjoying another fantastic run in the 2019/20 season, notching 9 goals and 20 assists across all competitions. With 17 of those assists in the Premier League alone, he’s on the verge of beating out Thierry Henry‘s record of 20 with 10 games in hand.
Sergio Aguero
Considered one of the best players to don the sky blue shirt, Sergio Aguero is the team’s record goalscorer with 146 Premiership goals. In his first year with the side, he famously scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute to beat Queens Park Rangers and win the Premier League over Manchester United. With three Premier League titles and three League Cups under his belt, Aguero looks to add more his trophy vault this year.
Raheem Sterling
Still blooming at Manchester City in his first two years after a massive £49 million transfer from Liverpool, Sterling has quickly emerged the last few seasons to become one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wingers.
The then 24-year attacker starred on the Manchester City team that won the Premier League in the 2017/18 season. Still just 25, the 2020 England footballer of the year has played 230 games for City, notching 89 goals and 72 assists along with winning two Premier League titles and four FA Cups.
Carlos Tevez
The Argentine striker Carlos Tevez played four years with Man City, where he made 113 domestic appearances and bagged 58 Premier League goals. Leveraging both his pace and tenacity, Tevez helped Man City to one league title and FA Cup each.
Aymeric Laporte
Manchester City’s £57 million signing, center-back Aymeric Laporte made 51 appearances on the City team that garnered the first domestic treble in English football history during the 2018-19 season (Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and the Community Shield).
The 25-year-old French footballer has only appeared in 7 games this Premier League campaign, having suffered a knee injury in August 2019. Guardiola’s side has incurred a 23% loss rate in Laporte’s absence, up from 8% when Laporte is active.
Aleksandar Kolarov
The Serbian left-back made 165 appearances with the Sky Blues, helping the club win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two Football League Cups.
